Any old iron, any old iron, any any any old iron......

This morning we were up bright and early in anticipation of yet another grand Lanoy adventure.

We were going to be visiting the bright lights and noise of the city of Plymouth and in particular the scrap metal merchant.   We had been  accumulating a very large pile of old lead which had come off the roof.  The builders had hidden it it away out of pikey prying eyes,  who were very probably likely to  spot it and steal it.  So this morning whilst I  walked around the garden and up the lane(  in my PJs and wellies ) to pick a nice bunch of daffodils to take over to mums.   His Nibs loaded up Rosie with a huge pile of scrap.  Rosie,  by the way is our dear old red Land Rover. We love her.

Once loaded  (and after churning up the front garden with her huge off road knobbly tyres) we set off to Plymouth.  The first scrappy we went to was closed  so ended up at another place.  We had to take ID with us so that they didn't think that we, ourselves, were the pikeys.  Once were were verified as kosher and hadn't pinched it off a church roof  we unloaded our stack of lead into a large bag that was hanging off the front of a fork lift truck.  The fork lift truck then took the load and weighed it on a massive weighing scale platform. The price for lead was (from memory) £970 a tonne, that's the rate they buy it from you.   I went into the office to see how much we had offloaded was was thrilled when the man behind the reception desk gave me a receipt for £377.00.  I then gave him my bank details and the £377 was paid directly into my bank account there and then.

I will take all the scrap we have from the renovation to the merchant.  They take everything, so all the old electrical wiring will go, old pipes, metal gutters, and the old copper water cylinders can go.  Copper was a good price today. I think it was £3650.00 a tonne

Our next destination was the log burner shop.
Where we bought, not one, not two, not three ...but 4 log burners !!  They are going to be delivered next week.   The money from was old scrap metal  went towards one of the log burners, so in effect we got one free..well that's how i thought of it !

The third destination was the plaster moulding shop.   We found a place that makes authentic ornate plaster mouldings.  I saw the most amazing ceiling rose, it was beautiful with carved roses and intricate leaf design.  it would look stunning in the drawing room.  It was 46 inches diameter, I wondered how much something like that would cost, and was amazed when i asked as it was only £108.00.     We took a while looking around the small shop and told the rather odd and vague teenager who appeared to be in charge that we would be back soon.  OK, he said its my dad who makes them, so if you want to phone him, he can tell you more about them.

this afternoon, I have been working on the carved fascias, whilst him indoors has been outdoors, moving wood .  The massive pile of wood i mentioned yesterday is growing daily.  So today he decided to squirrel some of it away in the big barn .  we probably have enough wood to last us for 6 months stored in there now.. practically every piece of wood that formed the outer construction of the roof has been removed, so you can imagine there's a heck of a lot  lot there .  Its ideal for burning if any one wants some. there's  plenty to go around.

this is just a small pile.  there is probably about 10 times this amount now

Ohhhhhh.............I nearly forgot...Tonight we have fresh  Baklava!!   I found a little  Iranian deli on Embankment Road that sells it !  yummmmm yummmmm
