Dont move the picture on the wall above the fire place ......

Why?

Well you may ask ...............

We had a phone call today from the log burner fitter.  Hes coming out next weekend to fit the log burner in my office and the one in the dining room.  The fireplace is the dining room is pretty much ready for the installation. However, the fire place in  my office, (which is currently a kitchen ) needs some work on it.  So we started today.  The chimney is 11 metres tall, from mantle to chimney pot.  We have had them camered and cleaned.   Today we had to remove the wood that fits inside the hood of the chimney.

There is currently a wood structure that fills the wide chimney hole, into which the old flue fits inside. It stops dirt, soot, birds , rain etc coming down into the fire place.  So about 1 o'clock today, armed with the trusty crow bar and heavy duty hammer and wrecking claw, his nibs began bashing away.  With his feet in the fireplace and his head and shoulders up the chimney hole, it was a sight!  Especially when his too large a waist  ( cus hes losing weight) size 34 inch jeans began to slouch down over his hips baring a large arse crevice! (hilarious photos to be updated soon )

"Oh no!".. he suddenly exclaimed.....  followed by several expletives...  "Go find the big torch".
I got the big beam torch and handed it to him up the chimney hole.   All went quiet for a minute..Me on the outside asking whats up?  wassup? wassup? tell me whats wrong? .   Then a rather muffled series of words beginning with F came from  inside the chimney.... A sooty faced husband appeared out from under the chimney hood... "Houston, we have a problem" he gravely told me.

What?

"Stick your head up the chimney" he told me.  Armed with the big torch I stepped into the hearth and poked my head up the chimney hole. Shining the torch around I could see stone, mortar, and  a tiny spot of sky right at the top of the chimney stack.  " what am I looking for" I asked.  I turned around and shone the torch in the other direction, to the right hand side of the chimney stack.
Ohhhh Heck !!!!!  what the 'blankety blank' is that?

We have a huge hole in the side of the chimney.  It looks like there is another chimney, right next to the main chimney we are using for the log burner installation   Or... it could be the vent for a bread oven or something, which is coming from the fire place on the other side of the wall.

We walked through into the sitting room which is on the other side of the wall where this fireplace is  and removed the large picture from above the fireplace.  If you look carefully you can just about make out  in the plaster of the chimney breast wall a scar in the plaster.  A scar showing where a very large fireplace could possibly be.  A scar that is about 5ft across from left to right and as tall as me..  A scar that is very obviously hiding something large.  As large as an ingle nook perhaps?

We stood there staring at it.  I puckered my face, and gave him 'that' sideways glance.. He knew what I was thinking already.   We appear to have a very large hidden ingle nook behind the plastered wall.  He went back into the kitchen and retured 2 seconds later with the crowbar, and large iron rod, and a big hammer.

The unfortunate problem was he had to leave home at 6pm. To drive to Bristol to catch a plane at 9.20 to get to work for tomorrow.

We now have a large hole in the wall behind the picture hanging above the mantle peice in the sitting room !  and Mum is coming to stay next weekend ...

So..............

DON'T MOVE THE PICTURE ON THE WALL ABOVE THE FIREPLACE  !!
