Poo ....

OK.. I know its not a nice subject to discuss , but  dont worry Im not going to throw any toilet humour jokes in to todays blog.   We all do it.  Its only natural.  But how many of us, know what happens after we flush the toilet?

Well.. read on to find out more.

If you live in a fairly modern house, you are more than likely to be on mains drains....  You do your business, flush and walk away and think no more of it.   You probably don't even think about what you put down there..  Masses of toilet tissue, 'ladies things' ,  loo cleaner, bleach and toilet cleaners, left over food even the dead goldfish have been flushed away before now.  You simply can't do that when you have a septic tank!  You shouldn't do it anyway regardless of whether you are on your own private drainage or not.  It ends up clogging up the chamber and the pipes leading to them... Most types of cleaning fluids will kill the bacteria that break down the poo so the septic chamber will stop working effectively .  London drains are massive Victorian affairs and they have huge fat deposits the size of ice bergs down in them.  This is because no one considers what they put down the toilet ..or down the kitchen sink.  Kitchen oil is one of the worst culprits for blocked drains. But also hair going down the bath or shower plug hole will clog pipes up as well. My hair clogs up the bath plug regularly , we know because often the bath water will take an age to drain away and Stevie has to take the panel off the side of the bath, unscrew the trap under the plug hole and remove the clog of matted hair and soap scum.  Hes been known to remove a lump the size of a small mouse. yucky yucky yucky..

If you live in a rural area or an older house  you more than likely have a septic tank.  Basically modern ones resemble a large onion shape chamber made of GRP  that is sunk into the ground.. or older ones are probably brick built chambers at the end of your garden and they have a drainage field usually under the vegetable plot !   If you have been watching the news , you will see in Somerset many thousands of acres of land are now flooded and have been since before Christmas.  In  rural Somerset, lots of properties have septic tanks... just stop and think for a minute...the land is completely flooded...therefore  the septic tanks will be flooded and poo is very probably now floating all over Somerset...mmm....nice.

Our friends who own Able Drains (www.abledrain.co.uk) came out to review our current situation, and armed with a CCTV camera and monitor they determined where the drain and septic chamber currently lies, and the fact that it is pretty clogged up with 150 years of poo and other detritus so we need to get something done about it pretty promptly.    We need to firstly get the drains pumped out, then repaired and re directed across the garden to where the new septic tank will be located.  This involves a mechanical digger removing 15 tons of soil and digging a huge hole in the ground as well as trenching across my lawn.

We also have to consider where the  new toilets / bathrooms  will be installed in the house because they will need  new soil pipes leading from the toilets baths and showers  out through the walls of the house to meet up with the drains outside.

Stevie can explain further about our plans for new poo pipes and new septic facilities if you're interested...
